Silverpoint is a drawing technique in which a silver rod or stylus is used to draw upon a prepared surface, silverpoint leaving no visible mark on an unprepared sheet of paper or panel. The mark which is made is very fine, resists erasure and will not blend or smudge. A silverpoint drawing is typically made by developing a number of individual strokes that may gradually be used to describe areas of tone, highlight and shadow, surface topography, etc. usually by employing one or more methods of hatching.

Silverpoint was widely used by artists active during the Renaissance, with masterful works produced by Leonardo and Raphael in Italy, Van Eyck and Albrecht Durer in the North. The drawings made ran the gamut from the more spontaneous mark making of gesture drawings to meticulous and refined works of portraiture, still life objects and nature studies.
