Artist's Statement:

Resilience Unbound: Navigating the Dynamics of Power is a solo exhibition that examines the ways power shapes identity, fear, and resistance in contemporary society. Through large-scale paintings and smaller intricate ink drawings, this exhibition interrogates the mechanisms of control and the resilience required to navigate oppressive structures. By blending grotesque distortions, obsessive fine lines, and vivid contrasts, my work challenges conventional depictions of the human form—presenting figures that are neither fully liberated nor entirely subdued, caught in a perpetual negotiation with power.

This exhibition extends beyond the personal to engage with broader socio-political narratives, reflecting on issues of surveillance, social suppression, and historical patterns of control. The works on display aim to confront the viewer, evoking discomfort and critical engagement with the forces that govern both individual and collective existence.

Bio:

Fatima Taylor (formerly Azimova) was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, during the final years of the Soviet Union. Her passion for painting and drawing emerged early, leading her to participate in an after-school program for gifted artists actively. She later pursued formal artistic training at the Benkov Art Academy, majoring in Fine Art and Fashion Design.

In 2001, Fatima and her family immigrated to the United States, where she focused on adapting to a new culture while raising her two children. Despite these challenges, her dedication to art remained steadfast. In 2009, she joined Shawnee State University as an instructor, teaching Introduction to Art and Studio Art. At the same time, she engaged with the local art community, exhibiting her work in solo and group shows at the Portsmouth Art Center and the Southern Ohio Museum while also delivering art lectures.

In 2014, Fatima expanded her teaching practice to Ohio University's Chillicothe campus, offering courses in drawing and painting. Her work gained recognition in various exhibitions, leading to invitations to showcase in West Virginia, Kentucky, Miami, Georgia, California, and New York.

After relocating to Columbus, OH, in 2017, Fatima became an integral member of the Ohio Art League, playing a key role in revitalizing the organization. As a Board Member, she managed artist memberships, social media campaigns, and a successful fundraiser to support operations. She also implemented innovative outreach initiatives, including a monthly newsletter and programs to recognize fellow artists.

Beyond academia and community involvement, Fatima maintained an active studio practice, offering private art lessons and working on commissioned projects. One of her notable public works is the outdoor mural Higher Goals, located in Hilliard, OH.

In 2022, Fatima took a significant step in her academic and artistic journey by joining the Ohio University Fine Arts Graduate Program. Her talent and commitment were recognized with both a Graduate Recruitment Scholarship and a Graduate Assistantship. Most recently, she was accepted into the Ph.D. program at the School of Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University, where she will continue exploring the intersections of art, philosophy, and social power.
