Join co-authors Donna & William Burtch as they talk about their book, W.G.: The Opium-Addicted Pistol Toting Preacher Who Raised the First Federal African American Union Troops. William Gould "W.G." Raymond was a staunch abolitionist and Union officer. He was also a preacher. Under President Lincoln's direct authority, he raised hundreds of Black Union soldiers on the wild streets of D.C., all eager to fight for their freedom. Many fought in the most important victory of Black troops in the Civil War. The War Department thwarted initial efforts. W.G. faced huge challenges, even paying for troop provisions and training out of his own pocket, never to be repaid.
Donna Burtch is the author of two books, both military histories. She is a published poet and teaches aquatic fitness.
The work of William Burtch spans award-winning magazine, journal and anthology publications. His new short story collection, Otherwise Wretched, published by Catamount Press, received critical acclaim and garnered a Finalist spot with the International Book Awards. As co-authors (and siblings) Donna and William wrote W.G., (Sunbury Press) a biography of William Gould Raymond.
